One of the most common discussions I have in schools when talking about restorative practices with teachers is: "Where will I find the time for all of this?" We completely understand the concern, it often feels like yet another item on an already exhaustive list of things to do. Juggling multiple responsibilities, all the while trying to maximise classroom time, so the possibility of grabbing more time here and there to get the job done seems like a pie in the sky notion.

Implementing restorative practices within your school community does require an initial time investment. However, restorative practices cultivate a problem-solving mindset, by involving all affected parties in the resolution process, these practices encourage creative and collaborative solutions. Students and staff become more proficient at proactively navigating challenges when they arise, as we know they will, and this prevents minor issues from escalating into major time-consuming matters.
Embracing restorative practices not only enhances individual abilities, but strengthens the entire school community when it comes to navigating challenging situations. It creates a more harmonious and efficient learning environment, and when that is the case, time is gained by a decrease in time taken to address challenging behaviour, thus providing a safer learning environment for everyone.
It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen.
